In a recent announcement, Japanese video game publisher Square Enix has partnered with PC gaming platform Elixir to advance the adoption of Web3 gaming. Elixir, which offers both traditional and Web3 video games on its platform, recently integrated the popular Epic Games Store library onto its platform. With Square Enix now on board, Elixir aims to merge the previously separate worlds of Web2 and Web3 gaming.

Hidaki Uehera, Square Enix’s Director of Business Development, has stated that this partnership with Elixir Games is another step towards exploring the potential of Web3-decentralized gaming. While there is little information on how Elixir will collaborate with Square Enix, Elixir CEO Carlos Roldan is optimistic that the partnership will help bring Web3 games to mainstream audiences.

Roldan has said that “this partnership brings us closer to Web3 gaming mass adoption.” He is also excited that Elixir users will be able to play Web2 and Web3 games without distinction. He added that the company has made significant efforts to prepare for scalability and anticipates more industry leaders to enter the space in the coming year, following in the footsteps of Square Enix.

Square Enix has been vocal about the potential of Web3 gaming for years and even led an investment round into the metaverse game The Sandbox in 2020. In early 2022, President Yosuke Matsuda wrote that crypto game economies are a new technology that’s “here to stay.” Matsuda has previously stated that 2021 was “Year One” for NFTs in Square Enix’s view. In late 2022, Square Enix announced its first Web3 game, Symbiogenesis, which will leverage the Ethereum scaling network Polygon for its NFT elements.

Elixir has added numerous Web3 games to its launcher, providing a range of titles across Solana, BNB Chain, Ethereum, and Polygon. These games include MMORPG World Eternal Online, quirky card battlers like Raini: Lords of Light and Elemental Raiders, and RPGs like Chronos and Bornless, to name a few. Overall, this partnership between Square Enix and Elixir aims to advance the adoption of Web3 gaming and bring it to the mainstream audience.
