The CEO of SpaceX, Tesla, and Twitter, Elon Musk, has reportedly purchased nearly 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) to advance his AI projects at Twitter, according to anonymous sources familiar with the company. GPUs are typically used to process large-scale AI models that require massive computational power. Musk had previously tweeted on March 18, 2023, that AI would be utilized to “detect & highlight manipulation of public opinion” on Twitter.
In the months ahead, we will use AI to detect & highlight manipulation of public opinion on this platform.

Although the project is reportedly in its early stages, the large GPU purchase shows Musk’s commitment to the endeavor. The sources also mentioned that the definite role of generative AI at Twitter remains unclear. Recently, Twitter acquired Igor Babuschkin and Manuel Kroiss, engineers who have extensive backgrounds in the AI field, to work on Musk’s team. These developments come just weeks after Musk and other tech researchers signed an open letter to temporarily halt AI development due to its risk to humanity. In 2017, Musk had previously warned regulators that AI research should be regulated “before it’s too late.”
